Republican nominee Donald Trump recently visited a Mechanicsburg high school, where he gave a stump speech to thousands in attendance. Among issues Trump stressed as priority is to bring jobs back to Harrisburg, and regain a robust economy, instead of allowing federal trade policies to snatch up income that he said should be poured into local communities.

The midstate, hit hard in a depressed economy, has had several public-private partnerships step up to help clean up urban blight. Recent efforts to improve quality of life, include Harrisburg City Council members allocating Community Development Block Grant funds to mow vacant lots, demolish blighted buildings and hire two new police officers for a pilot program in city schools. But, those efforts don’t include financial allocations to area nonprofits.

It’s no secret that Harrisburg has its fair share of sink holes, and structural problems, due to geological topography. The city has had it’s 9th homicide of the year recorded on July 30. And, many factories remain vacant from Hershey to Lemoyne.

Central Pennsylvania residents add value to the Harrisburg area from humanitarian outreach to cultural exceptionalism. During another stump speech on Monday in Virginia, Trump said in a speech that Harrisburg looks like a “war zone.” Push back began immediately, as countless individuals said they were offended by his comments.
