A post CNN/ORC survey revealed that voters who tuned in to watch the first Presidential debate thought Democrat Hillary Clinton won. Viewers said they thought she forced her opponent Republican Donald Trump to be on the defensive.
According to the survey, those who watched the debate were more apt to describe themselves as Democrats, and Independents. Voters of those persuasions said they thought Clinton performed better than Trump mostly because she was able to articulate voters’ concerns. In addition, voters agreed that Clinton was able to express her viewpoints clearly versus Trump’s ability to find resonance.
Broken down by percentages, the survey revealed the following:
- 62% said Democrat Hillary Clinton won
- 27% said Republican Donald Trump won
- 57% said Democrat Hillary Clinton better at addressing voters’ concerns
- 35% said Republican Donald Trump better at addressing voters’ concerns
- 53% said Democrat Hillary Clinton was more sincere
- 40% said Republican Donald Trump was more sincere
- 33% said Democrat Hillary Clinton spent more time attacking opponent
- 56% said Republican Donald Trump spent more time attacking opponent
- 54% of Democrats and Independents said Democrat Hillary Clinton won
- 33% of Democrats and Independents said Republican Donald Trump won
- 47% said the first presidential debate did not make a difference in their General Election vote
- 34% said the debate made them more apt to vote for Democrat Hillary Clinton
- 18% said the debate made them more apt to vote for Republican Donald Trump
- 62% said Democrat Hillary Clinton would do a better job handling foreign policy
- 35% said Republican Donald Trump would do a better job handling foreign policy
- 54% said Democrat Hillary Clinton would be better at handling terrorism
- 43% said Republican Donald Trump would be better at handling terrorism
- 51% said they favor Democrat Hillary Clinton’s economic approach
- 47% said they favor Republican Donald Trump’s economic approach
- 43% said Republican Donald Trump would be able to handle the job of President
- 55% said Republican Donald Trump would be able to handle the job of President
