SWATARA TOWNSHIP, Pa.–A 35-year-old woman was killed following a four-vehicle crash along I-283 in Dauphin County on Thursday morning.

The crash happened shortly before 9 a.m. in the northbound lane of I-283 in Swatara Township. A Kenworth Dump Truck driven by a 27-year-old Maytown man rear ended a Volkswagen Jetta near mile marker 1.2. The impact of the initial crash sent the Jetta into the center median. The dump truck continued forward and then slammed into a Ford Escape carrying three women.  The SUV then hit a fourth vehicle during the chain reaction crash.

The dump truck veered off the road, into the southbound lanes of I-283 and finally came to a stop after hitting a grass embankment on the shoulder of the highway, state police said.

A 35-year-old Lancaster woman who was a passenger in the Ford Escape died, according to state police reports. The two other women in the SUV, ages 35 and 43, sustained injuries. The driver of the Jetta also was hurt in the crash.

The driver of the dump truck and the driver of fourth vehicle were not hurt.

So far, no word yet on the identity of the woman who was killed.
